A brief Introduction About The Muslim Institute

The Muslim Institute is the biggest social, cultural, sporting and educational organization of the Muslims of West Bengal. Since India was groaning under the weight of servitude of the British, old political social and economic orders were disintegrating. The combined efforts of the Hindus and Muslims to oust the British from India through physical force by waging a war in the form of 1857 revolt i.e. The First War of Independence, having failed the war of extermination and repression by the British started against the Indians. The whole nation was plunged into gloom.
Welcome To The Muslim Institute
It was at this moment that some of our students and youth came forward and the foundation of The Muslim Institute in the month July 1902. It trained the students in the arts of debate and physical culture. They strove to awaken their people from their slumber .They searched for their roots and identity. Thus their movement merged with the rising tide of Indian Nationalism. The Muslim Institute since its inception became the centre of political, social, cultural and sporting activities of the people of Bengal. With the passage of time, the activities of the Muslim Institute multiplied. Besides, debate, library and gymnasium new sections of the indoor games like billiards, Table-tennis and carrom were opened.
Outdoor games were also introduced such as football, hockey, cricket and athletics. Its popularity rose to such a degree as besides Muslim intelligentsia, non-Muslims as well desired to become its member. Sir Gurudas Banerjee, Sir Lathbridge and Mr. Stephen, Mr. Radcliff (Statesman’s editor), Sir Sarat Chandra Das, Mr. Kumar Kamlanand Singh, Raja of Srinagar, Mr. Harinath Dey, and many others became its honorary members. In recent years its popularity has reached a high water-mark because of its diverse programmes. It organized successfully and on a grand scale Allama Dr. Md. Iqbal Centenary, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Centenary, 125th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Multilingual Afro-Asian writer’s symposium.
It hosted the 3rd Joint Convention of People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy in which 167 delegates from Pakistan and 200 from India participated. Several all India seminars and all India Mushairas were organized successfully. In 1997 the Muslim Institute organized a very grand scale and perhaps the biggest gala Bi-Centenary Celebration of Mirza Ghalib, who is considered to be the greatest Urdu poet who also wrote in Persian very fluently. Now this great institute has completed hundred and fifteen years of its existence and on this occasion a three day literary and cultural fest-Roshni is being observed this year 2017.
